This morning we received this letter from Monica Segal, a canine nutritionist from Canada that we thought you all should know about.
Newsworthy: Theory Points To New Virus |
Some people have heard about it and others haven't. If you're in the latter category - heads up. So far, it's been happening in California and Ohio, but although symptoms are the same, nobody is sure if these dogs have/had the same disease, or what the cause might be. "Symptoms include bloody diarrhea and vomiting, extreme lethargy, neurological problems, a lack of appetite and other maladies. There are countless causes of vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, even bloody diarrhea,” But the illness seen in the past few weeks is markedly different, "What made these cases unique is what the pathologist terms 'acute necrotizing vasculitis.' This is when the blood vessels become suddenly damaged and fluid begins leaking out of the vessels. Because of this, the cases I know of did not just have vomiting and bloody diarrhea, they also developed fluid around their lungs and in the abdomen.” Is this a new disease, a mutation of another virus, perhaps a virus we already know about...? No answers just yet. Everyone is waiting for pathology reports. Based on my experience with dog owners and dogs with all kinds of problems, I think it's fair to say that most people don't rush to the vet at the very first glimmer of a problem. A dog that vomits now and then isn't likely to make us panic. But!- bloody diarrhea, extreme lethargy, or neurological problems should cause us to react quickly at any time, especially in light of this possible virus being the cause, and perhaps even more so if you happen to live in the areas that have been reporting the problem. Read a news report here. Monica |
If you have a concern about this, please contact your vet for further information.
Just passing it on,
Jo, Stella and Zkhat
We heard about this and it's very scary. Mommy always rushes us to the vet if we so much as crack a toenail, so we know she'll try and take good care of all of us.
ReplyDeleteStay safe Stella!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Geneva,
Pia

ReplyDeleteWe agree stay safe. Have a serene Sunday and get some of that big easy in today.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Being in OHIO where 4 Deaths have occurred... We are watching this like hawks... Yesterday our mom wouldn't even let US go with her to the Agility Trial that our furend Sagira was in. SHE went... and then she WASHED and WASHED and WASHED her hands BEFORE she even came HOME.
ReplyDeleteAll of the deaths in Ohio happened within FOUR DAYS of when the poor dogs got sick... So mom is watchin US like hawks too... Both Ends of us.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS OUT fur all of our furends.
This is NOT somethingy that can be avoided by having had all of our vaccinations... it is NEW and there IS NO vaccination for it. They aren't even sure how it is spread.
the Cases in OHIO took place in NORTH WESTERN South Western and North Eastern parts of the state... MANY MANY miles from each other.
THANK YOU AGAIN for getting the word spread.. YOU are a good furend.
Thanks very much to you, Frankie, Ernie and Mom, for letting us know this is as real as can be and we should all watch our dogs (at both ends)!
DeleteJo, Stella and Zkhat
YES... it IS real. We don't want to cause Panic in any way...butt we all need to be very watchful... until the Vets can find answers. KNOWLEDGE is POWER. THANK you again for getting the word out.
ReplyDeleteOooh, Ma hadn't heard abouts this and we are in California!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up! Ma says she's gonna keep and even closer eye on me...geez, what's she gonna do? Velcro herself to me???!!

It's great that you are spreading the word. Very scary but good to be informed.
ReplyDeleteThat is awful. Good of you to spread the word.
ReplyDeleteHave a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
Thanks Stella. This is pretty scary. We'll all stay close to home where we can be safe.

Thanks for sharing this serious news. We have had cases in NM as well. There is still much debate about the nature of the virus but the point is that whatever it is is killing pups. Here we are encouraging total yard hygiene and the avoidance of dog parks. Please all be careful, all ages of pet is being affected.
