WHAT AUTUMN DOES TO ME . . .

We are forecasted for a hard frost tonight, and all that I had outside that was special was this little lavender that I planted this summer and it was just too hot for it to grow much.  So I brought it in the house and hope it grows this winter.

Makes me think of knitting and finishing this particular project, some thrummed mittens I started a year or two ago!

Brings memories of my son and my favorite pup, Otis.  You really can't tell but Oatsey was wearing his tux in this picture, which I made for him to wear to Mike's wedding but alas, he got sick and couldn't go!

Makes me think of Zkhat who is always looking for a warm and snuggy spot to snooze in when it starts getting cold.

And I am going through old pictures so I think of my dear Grandmother who graced my life until I was about four years old.
She was a teacher who loved prose and poetry her life long.  This picture is of her and her cousin.  She is on the left  and look at that gorgeous head of hair!

She loved this little poem

Build a little fence of trust around today
Fill the space with loving work and therein stay;
Look not between the shelt'ring bars upon tomorrow,
But take whatever comes to thee
of joy or sorrow.

She left me letters written to a 4 year old that I treasure!

Happy Fall to Everyone,

Jo, Stella and Zkhat

  2. What a beautiful little poem. We had our first frost of the season a couple of nights ago. The mittens remind me of a pair of beautiful felted wool mittens that my American friend knitted for me a couple of years ago. I feel the warmth of her friendship every time I wear them. Do finish your mittens!
    Cheers, Gail.

  3. I love that little poem and those mittens! We're moving toward fall here in Southern California - daytime temps in the high 90's but cooling off to the 60's at night. Oh, and the light is different....

  6. I'm not sure the lavendar will survive indoors, but I don't blame you for trying. It's hard to see what winter does to plants. I tried to save a rosemary plant but it didn't work. Ah well. There is always next year! When it gets chilly, I bring the cat beds back out from their storage place, and they're once again filled with sleepy kittehs!

  7. We are all loving the cooler temps here, but we are a Northern breed. Mom is glad the heat is gone, but she doesn't like it to be very cold either.

Your grandmother sounds like a very nice woman. Mom just loves those old photos. It is easy to see where you got your love of reading.

  8. I hope the lavender does well inside. I had horrible luck with plants this summer, it was just too hot and dry.

What great memories you've accumulated! I bet those letters are just fantastic. We have some old pictures of some family members, too, and they are like treasure to me. I guess because of the link to the past that they seem to represent. I wonder what people will think of our photographs a hundred years from now!

  16. I love the poem from your grandmother too. And, the photo of your son and Otis. Wonderful!

Did you get that hard frost? We still haven't gotten one but there's a mention of snow in the forecast... I can't say that I'm excited about winter this year but I'll make the best of it (and probably end up liking it!).

  17. You're so lucky that you have those letters. When I think of all the letters I threw away -- all that history -- makes me sick. *sigh* Love this post.

  18. This time of year always leaves me thinking of connections...to the past and the future. Must be the season. What a treasure to have those letters. Treat that little plant with love, I sense it is special and has a Spring time duty it must perform. Otis' tux is very dapper; wish he had gotten to wear it on the big day!

Picked up some cherry juice and apple cider vinegar at the Vitamin Cottage grocery today. Steve is feeling a tad of relief...paws and fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice.
