  2. No, its not a Featherweight, its a Singer 66,and every Singer has a serial number ; you go to the Singer website and type the number it you will get the year it came off the line. This one was 1942. The instruction book shows a treadle machine, then this one. I just love this machine!

  5. Our MOM actually learned to sew on a Singer TREADLE machine... like 87 bazillion years ago. She has a spiffy Viking now...

  7. Just like my Mother's. Once my Granny's, I believe. My Dad also used it, when Mother was out, to mend the sails of his dinghy, and we kids were sworn to secrecy, but he always ended up breaking the needle so she found out anyway!
    Cheers, Gail.

  8. Wow, back then Singer really knew how to make a sewing machine. My last Singer was a piece of junk that spent more time in the shop than sewing.

  11. OMD, Mom has one like that. It used to be her Mom's and it was set in a table of some sort. Grandma had it made into a portable, but our Mom says it is way too heavy for her to move. She has a smaller portable Singer, but it is broken:(

  12. What ever happened to sewing things? I suspect in todays throw it away world they're not used much anymore. This one looks just like the one my mom had...:)

    1. Troutbirder, the world is full of people who are sewing today. Myself I like to piece quilts, no, not from worn out scraps but classy new 100% cotton fabric you buy in a quilt shop. Many women are sewing their own clothing, and a few years ago I liked to sew sports wear for my son and sweatshirts for myself. Its relaxing, its fun, and you can make exactly what you want, not having to buy whats on the rack.

      Cheers,
      Jo

By the way, there are men who are doing arty style quilts, too, Google for Men Quilters!

  15. Hey Jo, Stella and Zkhat, We've been having nothing but rain and thunderstorms all week. But I think I'd rather have that than the snow!! Great picture of the sewing machine! Happy Thursday!

  16. Howdy Jo, I remember my dear sweet mum had a machine very like that one. Sadly, I can't remember whatever happened to it. No worries, and love, Carol

  17. This looks just like the machine my grandmother taught me to sew on, except hers was in a floor stand type cabinet...and she had had it converted to electric from an old treadle. Does this mean new quilting projects are underway?
